MONROE COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT 2018 FSA AND EOC RESULTS SHOW IMPROVMENTS IN SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS
The Florida Department of Education released raw data from the 2018 Florida Standards Assessment (FSA), and end-of-course (EOC) exams.
Executive Director of Assessment and Accountability Dr. David Murphy said the results show where the district has made improvements and which areas may need more attention for the coming year.
The district’s students made dramatic improvements in Geometry, jumping from 53% last year to 73% of students passing the EOC exam an improvement of 20% from previous year results. Students also made improvements on the FSA in 5th and 8th grade Science.
Dr. Murphy also said, the district will continue to look at the data and analyze even further after its release 24 hours ago. “In the most heavily tested areas, Grades 3-10 English Language Arts and Grades 3-8 Mathematics, performance remained exactly the same as 2017 at the district level. Greater analysis at the school level and grade level will provide greater insight into areas that can be improved. Also, as always, these assessments represent only a part of what our teachers do for students on a daily basis.”
Superintendent Mark Porter said after his deep dive into the data, he expects Dr. Murphy to be able to collaborate with the districts Teaching and Learning team to determine next-steps. “Our students did phenomenal this year, all things considered. Students and staff have been resilient and have demonstrated their ability to restore academic rigor. The next step is to look into ways we can work with areas where we can improve and to determine what additional resources may be needed to make that happen. There are new pathways and techniques we have incorporated into the curriculum this past school year. We will continue to make these necessary adjustments with the understanding that these results are only one of the indicators we use to determine our student’s success.”
Dr. Murphy said so far the raw data does show assessment results compared to last year from a district level, as follows:
- Improvement in Grade 5 Science from 62% to 64% Level 3 or Higher.
- Improvement in Grade 8 Science, 57% to 60% Level 3 or Higher.
- Improvement in Biology from 68% to 71% Level 3 or Higher.
- Improvement in Grades 6-8 Math from 61% to 65% Level 3 or Higher.
- Improvement in Geometry from 53% to 73% Satisfactory or Above.
- Held constant in Grades 3-10 English Language Arts at 59% Level 3 or Higher.
- Held constant in Mathematics across all grade levels at 63% Level 3 or Higher.
