Have Fun at Schooner Wharf’s Minimal Regatta
Due to heavy rain and winds with strong gusts forecast Sunday (5/27) The 27th Annual Schooner Wharf Minimal Regatta is rescheduled for Sunday, June 3rd. Sunday’s weather is forecast to be just right for a great day of hijinks and hilarity with minimal materials and maximum creativity.
At Schooner Wharf Bar’s Minimal Regatta, the smallest boats share the biggest adventures.
Now in its 27th year, the Minimal Regatta is a Memorial Day tradition of maritime mayhem featuring costumed captains piloting questionable crafts through a race course in front of the iconic watering hole.
The homemade vessels are made from the most minimal of materials: 1 sheet of plywood, two 2-by-4s, one pound of fasteners and one roll of duct tape. That’s right, just one roll – 60 yards long. Paint is optional, but all adhesives are prohibited and caulk is considered contraband.
Teams of up six people may work together to assemble a seaworthy vessel, but only one paddler can be on board and paddling through the race course.
The fun starts this year at 11 a.m. on Sunday, June 3rd. Teams may register for the Minimal Regatta as late as race day. Vessel registration starts at 11 a.m. and vessel inspections start at 12:30 p.m. with the first heat starting soon after 1:00 p.m.
Boats may enter the race in one of two categories: Kayak type of design or the clumsier, but often more creative, Open Design. Prizes are awarded in each category for Fastest, Most Creative Design, Best Team Costumes, Best Paint Job and Most Sportsmanship. Even the
Spectators at this wet, wild and wacky regatta can expect the unexpected in craft design, costumes, showmanship and sportsmanship. Past vessels have been constructed as paddle wheelers, paddle and surf boards, galleons, spaceships, chili peppers, guitars, alligators, bat mobiles and basically anywhere an imagination can go!
The waterfront course begins right off the dock in front of Schooner Wharf, ensuring plenty of hilarity for spectators on the Harbor Walk.
“From there, you never know what’s going to happen. Things turn wet and wacky the minute the boats hit the water,” said event founder Evalena Worthington.
There will be drink specials all day, great galley fare and live music with the steel pan sound of the islands from The Last Mango Duo followed by the Cayo Ritmo Duo.
But no matter what happens, the Minimal Regatta provides maximum fun. Check it out at SchoonerWharf.com or call 305-292-3773 for registration and information.
