Local Artists Featured During First Thursday: New Paintings by Rick Worth, Beach Scenes by Lucy Paige, and Kate Divoll’s Ode to Adolescence

On May 3 from 6-8pm, The Studios of Key West keeps their doors open late for First Thursday, a monthly open house celebrating new exhibitions, studio artists, and current projects.

The perennial winner of “Best Artist” awards, Rick Worth is among the defining Key West artists of his generation, and likely the most productive. From his “shingle paintings,” which frame snippets of Old Town architecture on fragments of metal roofs, to the dozens of murals bearing his signature all across the island, Worth is a fountain of creativity. For this not-to-be missed event, Worth fills the Sanger Gallery with recent work and installation-size paintings.

On display in the first floor’s Zabar Project Gallery is a curated scene of Kate Divoll’s inner child. Titled “Sitting in the Shade,” this series of poems and illustrations acts as an ode to her adolescence in Key West spend hiding from the sun but basking in the island’s magic.

The third floor XOJ Gallery features a solo exhibition by Studios’ artist Lucy Paige. The paintings of sunbathers of all shapes and sizes make up this “Beach Day” series. Scenes of sunbathing and playing in the ocean, in these bright, saturated colors marks a departure from Paige’s previous work of abstract paintings. Lively and charming, her new work is quintessentially tropical but never kitschy.

Visitors can also stop by during regular gallery hours, Tuesday-Saturday, 10am-4pm, to view exhibitions and projects-in-progress.
