Truman Splash and Play Area Open!
Mayor Craig Cates the City Commission, and the City of Key West and the Toppino family gave a warm welcome to a large gathering Saturday for the ribbon cutting ceremony for the Truman Waterfront Park’s Splash and Play area.
The Easter egg hunt, sponsored by Charley Toppino and Sons, Inc. was a huge hit with the anxious kids, as was the new splash park. The adults enjoyed the celebration with a fabulous catered spread, also sponsored by the Toppino family.
The opening of this play area with its water feature, covered pavilion and large expanse of inviting green space marks the near completion of the full first phase of park development.
The park is the reincarnation of Navy property that was deeded to the City as part of the 1998 Base Reuse and Closure process. This first phase of redevelopment included re-routing the access road to Ft. Zachary Taylor State Park and the construction of the amphitheater. The amphitheater is very near completion, and has already hosted several shows.
