Diana Nyad is set to lead a series of walks as part of an innovative EverWalk program

Diana Nyad, the maverick endurance swimmer and honorary Key West citizen, is set to return to “her home away from home” April 2-6 to lead a series of walks as part of an innovative EverWalk program.

It was Labor Day, 2013, when Nyad made history, emerging from the sea onto Smathers Beach in Key West, after 53 continuous hours of swimming the grueling 110.86 miles from Havana.

Thousands of Key Westers and fans cheered as Nyad uttered her now-famous words “Never Ever Give Up.”

Expedition leader Bonnie Stoll embraced Nyad after she staggered to the high tide mark on the beach to officially complete the epic swim.

Nyad and Stoll have launched EverWalk, their vision of inspiring a million Americans to make walking a healthy part of their daily lives.

In Key West, Nyad and Stoll are to lead five 10-mile walks Monday, April 2, through Friday, April 6.

They have invited EverWalkers from around the country to crisscross Key West each morning 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. and then travel to Big Pine Key to volunteer for Habitat for Humanity each afternoon.

Key West residents, as well as visitors, are invited to join them for walks as well as Habitat volunteer missions. Participants can walk the entire route or any part of it.

The daily routes are posted on the EverWalk Facebook page, as the Big Pine Habitat location will be.  https://www.facebook.com/everwalkusa

Nyad says: “After training in the paradise of Key West for four summers, and being celebrated and assisted by the wonderful citizens of that magical place, Bonnie and I and our entire team will always consider Key West our heart place. We are over the moon to come back and visit all our favorite spots. And we sincerely hope Key Westers will come out and walk with us at least a part of every day while we’re there.”
