Miami’s best kept secret (and first ever Wynwood Arts Institution) is preparing for takeoff with an exciting new Board of Directors
Jason Korman, President of the Bakehouse Art Complex announced the appointment of four new members to its Board. Korman stated “After 31 years, Bakehouse is finally poised to become the hub of where great art is made in Miami. With our new, dynamic, revitalizedboard, we have the talent required to drive, this change and deliver the transition.”
- Bernadette Despujols, who serves the Bakehouse artist community as their representative to the Board. Despujols is an artist and architect who works with a diverse variety of materials, scales, and strategies, intervening and assembling objects, in small format paintings or large participatory sculptures. Her body of work questions gender identity, the perception of women by society and themselves, and notions of intimacy in a world that revolves around sex.
- Jessica Higgins is a public speaker, author, women’s equality advocate, and business growth and development expert. She has lived in Miami for over 10 years and is passionate about transforming the city from a transient place to a real community. She serves as Chief Operating Officer of the Miami-based, Gapingvoid Culture Design Group. Higgins was named a Breakthrough Female Founder of 2017 by Huffington Post. She has been published in USA Weekly, Thrive Global, Huffington Post, Artrprnr Magazine, Her Magazine, VoyageMIA, and is a regular contributor to more than 20 publications.
- Terry Schechter is active in a number of nonprofits and has been a volunteer or philanthropist for over 40 years. She is committed to making the arts a vital part of Miami’s development, with a particular interest in community outreach and collaboration. Schechter has chaired, presided over, and worked with a variety of scholarly, cultural and social organizations, including trustee of Perez Art Museum and its predecessor institution MAM from 2001 to 2015, and president of Funding Arts Network from 2009-15. She is presently Director of Community Outreach and Special Projects for the Miami City Ballet.
- Lia Yaffar-Pena is an independent consultant in the areas of Strategic Thought Partnership and Execution. Yaffar-Pena’s experience spans over 25 years in the area of Financial Services, including positions of various levels of responsibility in the retail and private banking, brokerage, and investment advisor platforms including HSBC Securities, Espirito Santo Bank, and Charles Schwab. She has served on the Board of Directors of a Florida chartered Bank, Broker/dealer, and Investment Advisor. She currently serves as Director on the Board of the Salvadoran American Humanitarian Foundation (SAHF), a Florida non-profit organization whose mission is to help the underserved in El Salvador through human development programs.
The Bakehouse Art Complex, located at 561 NW 32 Street in Wynwood, provides coveted studio residencies, infrastructure, and community to enable the highest level of artistic creativity, development, and collaboration for the most promising talent.
