MONROE COUNTY’S BIG PINE KEY SENIOR CENTER REOPENS FOLLOWING HURRICANE IRMA REPAIRS
BIG PINE KEY – Monroe County’s Big Pine Key Senior Center reopened for limited use Friday, March 9, with an AARP computer class. The center at 380 Key Deer Boulevard, behind the Big Pine Key Fire Station, had been closed since September due to damage caused by Hurricane Irma.
On Monday, March 19, all activities at the senior center will resume, with the return of the Monroe County Social Services Nutrition Program. Meals were provided to all the Big Pine Key nutrition site clients during the center’s closure via Social Services’ nutrition and transportation staff.
“We are so happy to have the Big Pine Key seniors back at their senior center,” said Sheryl Graham, Sr. Director of Social Services.
Monroe County public work crews led repairs to the roof and for water intrusion. The center got a new coat of lime green paint and a new hot water heater, new air conditioning units and a new dishwasher is on the way.
The center is open from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., with lunch served at noon. Anyone 60 years of age and older is eligible for the nutrition program. The center also is the popular location for activities that include: tai chi, yoga, exercise classes, quilters and dance classes. To reach staff during business hours, call 305-872-3990.
