RE: Short Answers
Dear Pappy:
So you want the grandkids to feel what it’s like to be old, uncomfortable with technology, and have little discretionary income? We suggest you try to remember what it’s like to be so busy, tired and emotionally tapped out that a relaxed phone chat with grandparents means a sacrifice of a different kind.
I found your response to “Pappy” (see above) cold, dismissive and disrespectful. While today’s technology allows busy people to be in contact in a time efficient manner, it does not provide the warmth and emotional intimacy of a phone call. How many times have we all said: “It’s good to hear your voice”? And actual person-to-person conversations convey information not always adequately expressed in written communications. To describe a “relaxed phone chat with grandparents” as a “sacrifice” is callous and self-indulgent. I enjoy your column and find your no-nonsense responses refreshing and usually spot-on, but I strongly feel you dropped the ball on this one.
