MONROE COUNTY PRESENTS FF/EMT DAVID REEVES WITH 2017 EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR AWARD

KEY WEST, FL – The Monroe County Board of County Commissioners presented Fire Fighter/EMT David Reeves with Monroe County’s 2017 “Employee of the Year” award.

Reeves, who works for the County’s Emergency Services department, also was awarded the “Employee of the Quarter” for the 4thQuarter.

The County’s other 2017 Employee of the Quarter winners were: Executive Administrator Tania Stoughton (Fleet Management), Transportation Driver Franklin Carey (Social Services) and Supervisor Michael Basham (Solid Waste & Recycling).

Monroe County’s Employee of the Year is selected from the four Employees of the Quarter. These employees are chosen for going above and beyond their own work responsibilities, and showing continual demonstration of the values of Monroe County.

After Hurricane Irma struck the Keys, FF/EMT Reeves stepped up, took charge and led teams of off-duty firefighters to assist anyone in need, despite having significant damage to his own home on Cudjoe Key. He also opened his house to host strangers flying in from the mainland so there would be a base for their operations.

Day after day, he led groups that cleared debris and gutted houses, all to help people in the community rebuild their lives. The groups included many of Reeves co-workers in Emergency Services, who were helping out while off-duty.

County employee Mary Napoli, whose home was badly damaged by Irma, said: “My home received 4 feet of flooding and was full of mold. I had no idea how my husband and I would ever start our clean-up process while caring for our infant son and working full-time.Firefighter Reeves reached out to me and told me not to worry, he had a team of people who would take care of business. He wasn’t exaggerating.”

Reeves came to her house with several others and in one day completely gutted her house.

After Irma struck, Reeves also led an effort to get the badly damaged Big Pine Academy repaired enough for kids to be able to go back to school.

“We are just so proud of David and what he was able to orchestrate by bringing firefighters from all over to help our community,” Monroe County Fire Chief James Callahan said.
