FREE MEAL PLAN EXTENSION FOR STUDENTS ENDING JANUARY 31st IN MONROE COUNTY SCHOOLS
MONROE COUNTY, Fla. –The emergency free meal plan extension due to Hurricane Irma comes to an end on January 31st for students. Monroe County School families are encouraged to fill out the free meal application online.
Families who previously applied for assistance before the storm, or received emergency SNAP assistance after the storm will remain eligible for free meals for the remainder of the year. Students who qualified for reduced meal status will remain eligible for free meals for the duration of this school year. Food and Nutrition Services Director Melissa Albright said families are encouraged to apply for assistance, even if they are unsure of their qualification status. Parents can go online towww.keysschools.com to access the application in one click.
Superintendent Mark Porter said the Food and Nutrition Service team’s efforts for MCSD students will be ongoing. Mr. Porter added, the ending of this national opportunity opens the door to the beginnings of a local one. “We were fortunate to have a team who advocated relentlessly for our students at the national level. The district’s goal however, is to continue to ensure our students have access to nutritious meals regardless of status. Our Food and Nutrition Services team hopes the community will step in now and donate funds to their local school’s Emergency Meal Fund to pick up a meal for a potential student in need. The fund will be used when a student comes through the line without payment.”
The Monroe County Food and Nutrition Services team provides access to meals for more than 8,700 students throughout the district.
