Cosmetic shop makes refund

The Key West Rip-Off Rapid Response Team has suspended picketing Tresor Rare, a cosmetics shop at 120 Duval St. after the owner refunded an Alabama women $3,010 and signed a five point best business practices agreement with the group.j

Spokesperson Tevis Wernicoff said “We were happy to help these nice people get their money back but these rip offs should not be happening in the first place”

In August of 2017, the women, Sandy Ceravolo of McCalla, Alabama had an allergic reaction to the products she purchased after receiving a “free” facial at the store. She tried unsuccessfully to return the unopened products the next day but the store refused to issue a refund.

The Rip Off Team, a local Key West consumer advocacy group, tried unsuccessfully to secure a refund before starting a sidewalk protest in front of the store this Tuesday. The protest ended Wednesday afternoon when the store owner Eliran Damri issued a refund check to Ms. Ceravolo and signed a five point “best business practices” consent agreement with the group.

The agreement requires the business to honor a 30 day return policy and post signs in the store clearly stating the return policy. It forbids employees from accosting or touching customers on the street, smoking on the sidewalk, throwing cigarette butts into storm drains and spitting on the sidewalk while working.The agreement also requires the store to follow all city ordinances and fill out a written statement of product and service costs prior to the commencement of any sale.

The Rip-Off Team has started a citizen’s recruitment campaign with local newspaper ads and a Facebook page.

Bruce Mitchell, an organizer for the group says: “We are hearing from many local folks who are sick and tried of being hassled on the street and hearing about these shameful rip offs. We are planning to expand our efforts with help from community minded citizens. These rip-off shops must be stopped. They are ruining our city’s reputation and the victim’s stories are heartbreaking.”
