In “Heisenberg,” Uncertainty Creates Surprises For Its Two Actors

When “Heisenberg” by Simon Stephens makes its Key West premiere for four performances only January 25-28 at The Studios of Key West, audiences will be introduced to Alex and Georgie, two oddly matched characters. Key West’s celebrated actor Mike Mulligan plays Alex and is teamed with acclaimed Chicago actor Dana Black as Georgie. Mr. Mulligan comments that Alex is one of his favorite roles – “He’s in his 70’s, a loner, he’s closed himself off, and then he meets this eccentric, younger woman.” Ms. Black adds “My character asks him to surprise her, but she is the one full of surprises. She is smart, she makes up stories, she is lonely, and she is exciting.”
Mark Kennedy of Associated Press said playwright Simon Stephens “does nothing less than alchemy here. He captures new love and old love at the same time, hope and fear, the new world and the old. He’s turned the simplest of tales — boy meets girl — into an unexpectedly rich thing with just two chairs, two tables and two actors.” Heisenberg, author of “The Uncertainty Principle,” is never mentioned in the play, but it is his famous idea about the limitations of observation that underpins the life affirming and ever-changing relationship of Georgie and Alex. As Georgie says in the play, “If you watch something closely enough you have no possible way of telling where it is going or how fast it’s getting there.”
“This is a minimalist play which is all about behavior, and I am delighted to work with two actors of such intensity and talent.” says Director Dennis Zacek, Artistic Director Emeritus of Chicago’s Tony Award Recipient, Victory Gardens Theater. “The Studios of Key West is a perfect environment for this two-hander.” Zacek, is reuniting with actor Mulligan after last year’s powerful production of “Blackbird“ by David Harrower.
The production team includes Catherine Johnson (Stage Management), Don Lynch (Set Design) and Art Singley and Greg Rue of The Art of Sound (Lighting and Sound).
Performances at The Studios of Key West, 533 Eaton Street are Thursday, January 25, Friday, January 26, and Saturday, January 27 at 7:30pm and Sunday, January 28 at 3:00pm. Prices are $38 general admission, $30 for TSKW members, with a limited number of $55 VIP tickets available. VIP tickets provide priority reserved seating.
