Kids Korner / Wildlife Center Has Amazing Animals
Have you ever been to the Key West Wildlife Center at 1801 White St.? You should go and see all their amazing animals they rescue and take care of. They are open 9a.m.-5 p.m., seven days a week and if an emergency occurs they will assist you at any time.
Over the year they take in about 1,300 wild animals and 1,200 chickens. They rescue and help animals live in a better environment and then when the animals get better they release them where they found them except for chickens. The chickens get sent off to farms and don’t have to be sent back to the streets where they could get hurt.
When you walk in someone will greet you; then you can walk on the trail into the park. There is a big pond in the back that has lots of turtles and you may see roosters and small birds aside the pond. They also have a chicken named Charles who is very friendly and if you pet him it won’t bite you.
In the center of the park they have an aviary with many different birds, pelicans, herons, ducks and a hawk. They have a white heron that got injured by a fish hook caught in its eye.
If you would like to volunteer you have to be 18 years or older or if you are mature enough they will let you volunteer even if you are younger than 18 years. So visit and enjoy observing the wildlife center. When you are done observing the center please give a donation. They also have a wildlife website: keywestwildlifecenter.org
On Sunday March 9from 3-5:30 p.m., there will be a fundraiser and auction at the West Martello Tower (1100 Atlantic Blvd) helping the injured animals. It is $25 for adults and kids under 10 are free. They are going to release some pelicans at 4:30. I will be there and I hope you will be there, too.
