Letter to the Editor

Dear Editor,
I’m a Vietnam Army veteran disabled since 1972 due to a traumatic brain injury.
While visiting Key West in May, I was approached on Duval Street by someone passing out what looked like candy. Mistakenly I ate the sample that turned out to be soap. I was then ushered into the store and convinced to have a free facial because of the mix up.

A very attractive woman then charmed me into buying $8,550 of cosmetics. I got so focused on this young women I wasn’t thinking about the products or the cost. But I did sign the receipt and the products were all mailed to my home.

Upon returning from vacation I realized I had been duped. On a fixed income I could`t afford these products and sent them all back to the store. The owner called me and said he would not refund my money and could`t accept the products back. He tried to scare me and even threatened to call the police on me.

I had a terrible time getting my money back until contacting the Key West Rip Off Rapid Response Team. Months after this personal nightmare, they were able to finally get my money back. I am grateful to the Rip Off Rapid Response Team and the store for returning the money.

I have filed a complaint with the city of Key West code office about the sections of the city code this business violated to take advantage of me. I hope the city will go after all businesses that violate city code and rip people off.

I also hope you locals will tell your guests and all visitors not to become a skin cream scam victim like me.

Sincerely yours,

Bob Lapworth
