Elena Spottswood succeeds Scales as member of FKCC Board of Trustees
Gov. Rick Scott appointed Elena Spottswood to the District Board of Trustees of Florida Keys Community College on Friday. Spottswood will serve the remainder of the term previously held by Edwin A. Scales III, which ends on May 31, 2014. Scales, a Key West attorney, resigned when Scott appointed him to the Third District Court of Appeals. This is the second term as a trustee for Spottswood. She was appointed in 2001 by then-Governor Jeb Bush and served until 2005.
Born in Havana, Cuba, and raised in Miami, Spottswood has lived in Key West since 1993 where she raised four children with her husband Robert. She attended Miami Dade Community College and holds a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from Florida International University.
Spottswood has a long history of community service. She is a 20-year member of the Board of Directors of the San Carlos Institute and was the president of the founding board of the Key West Symphony Orchestra. She also served 10 years on the Board of Directors of the PACE School for Girls and two years on the Board of Directors of Safeport. Last year, Attorney General Pam Bondi appointed her to the Florida Commission on the Status of Women.
“I believe Florida Keys Community College has a potential that has been untapped,” said Spottswood. “I do not have all the answers but I hope to work hard as a Trustee to explore ways that the College can get closer to reaching its potential.”
She added: “It is important that we have a community college. It’s great that our kids can choose to stay in town and attend college. I believe it is important to be a choice for kids from other parts to come to Key West. I attended a community college in my hometown. That allowed me to work full time while attending college at night.”
Spottswood joins Key West attorney Tim Keonig, Marathon radio producer Anne O’Bannon, Marathon real estate businessman Brian Schmitt and Upper Keys restaurateur Robert Stoky on the College’s five-member governing board.
