Reminder: Law Enforcement not available during the storm
As Hurricane Irma approaches Sheriff Rick Ramsay would like to remind everyone that law enforcement services will not be available as the storm gets closer and as is hitting the Florida Keys.
“We will not put our employees in at risk of life and limb because someone decided to stay in the Keys despite the evacuation order,” said Sheriff Ramsay. “Once the storm gets close, and conditions begin to deteriorate, we will be ceasing services until it is safe for us to resume.”
Ensuring the safety of employees is paramount. Making sure Sheriff’s Office vehicles and other assets are safe is also crucial, so that emergency responders can go back to work after the storm passes.
“I anticipate we will no longer respond to calls beginning sometime tomorrow late morning,” Sheriff Ramsay said. “We have to have time to get all our people into safe shelters, including our dispatchers who take these calls and the deputies who respond to them,” he said. “I want to wish everyone good luck; if you decided to stay, this will be a frightening time. This is a huge, powerful and devastating storm.”
There is still time to leave, although the window of opportunity is closing fast. Granted, the storm will be hitting many areas of Florida, but the dangerous storm surge potential in the Keys makes this a very dangerous place to stay.
