RESCUE TAILS: AN FKSPCA SUCCESS STORY
“MEATBALL”
BY TAMMY FOX-ROYER
Executive Director Florida Keys SPCA
We understand that if you ever have a housing crisis and need to move, there are a million things on your mind. But please remember to take care of your pets and if you can no longer care for them, please bring them to the FKSPCA. We not only accept cats and dogs but any domesticated animal – from tropical birds to pot-bellied pigs.
This brings me to the story of “Meatball. When a local family was evicted from their apartment, they left behind their seven white rats. The police found them in a cage with no food and no water. There weren’t even any droppings in the cage which generally means that they had not eaten in a long, long time.
Sadly, we lost three of the animals. Of the remaining four, three were quickly adopted but one, which we called Meatball, was a tougher case. Being abandoned had turned Meatball into a terrified and panicky little rat – and therefore quite unadoptable. But Kris and CJ, two of our volunteers, were not willing to give up on Meatball. They took him home and gave him the love and security that quickly turned Meatball into a wonderful, loving pet.
Today, Meatball has a veritable “Rat Palace” and two terrific owners – who have discovered what great companions rats can be! As Kris says, “Meatball captured my heart from the very first.” I think if he could talk, Meatball would say the same about Kris and CJ. Love can have an incredible impact on everyone.
If you have room in your heart for a wonderful animal like Meatball – or any of the adoptable pets at the shelter, please contact me at [email protected].
