Two Suspected Drug Dealers Arrested

Two suspected drug dealers were arrested last night after first fleeing police, then crashing their car into a telephone pole.

The Key West Police Special Investigations Unit was conducting surveillance in response to complaints of drug activity in the 600 block of Angela Street. They spotted the suspect car and attempted to stop it, but the driver fled.

Detectives soon located the car at the dead end of Virginia Street. As they approached, the driver, 57-year old Jeffrey Smith of Miami, jumped out of the vehicle and fled on foot. He left the car in gear, and it crashed into a utility pole. Smith was apprehended as he tried to scale a nearby wall.

Smith had thrown out a black bag containing 55 bags of crack cocaine, nine bags of powdered cocaine, 14 bags of suspected heroine, and over $3000 in cash.

Smith was charged with possession with intent to distribute for the crack cocaine, fleeing and eluding police, resisting arrest without violence, leaving scene of crash, tampering with evidence and possession of drug paraphernalia. Charges are pending on the other powder until lab work identifies the suspected heroine.

The passenger in the car, 44-year old Michael Fernandez of Key West, was arrested for possession of five bags of crack cocaine that he threw from the vehicle and for another three that he had concealed in his buttocks. He was charged with tampering with evidence. He was also charged with two counts of sale of cocaine and one count of using a two way communications device to commit a felony.
