Key West Plastic Surgeon Helps with Local Food Bank

Dr. Scott Loessin lends his hands to help The Star of the Sea Foundation

STOCK ISLAND –  The idea is simple: Load fresh fruits and vegetables into a refrigerator truck and transport it to one of two facilities in Key West and Key Largo where it is stored and then distributed to low-income individuals and working-poor families throughout the County. A local favorite Key West Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Scott Loessin, spent some time volunteering at the Star of the Sea Foundation on Stock Island, a local community food bank. The goal at the Star of the Sea Foundation (SOS) is easy: increase the health and well-being of low-income individuals and families in Monroe County, Florida. Through this operation, more than 50 percent of the food provided is fresh fruits and vegetables, meats and dairy products, and staple items such as rice and beans.

A physician in Florida for over 35 years, Dr. Scott Loessin has always been very active in his community, on the front-line in the battle against hunger and poverty.  Dr. Loessin believes in fighting malnutrition with nutritional education, as well as making healthy choices available to those who have difficulty affording a healthy, balanced diet.

It is no coincidence that many U.S. food banks — the organizations on the front lines of fighting hunger — increasingly are promoting “food as medicine” strategies designed to address, not exacerbate, the high rate of chronic health problems among the poor. Physician involvement in contributing time to community nutritional programs is a trend that Dr. Loessin hopes will become more prevalent in communities across the country.

Dr. Scott J. Loessin is a renowned Plastic Surgeon who is board-certified in both plastic and reconstructive surgery by the American Board of Plastic Surgery who specializes in aesthetic/cosmetic plastic surgery of the face, breast, and body. Dr. Loessin was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and received his medical degree from the University of Wisconsin Medical School in Madison, and then went on to complete two residencies in general surgery and plastic surgery at The Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. During that time he was mentored and trained to become a double board certified surgeon.
