LVA Tutor and Students of the Month

Literacy Volunteers of America (LVA) English as a Second Language (ESL) Haitian-born Students of the Month are Enide and Calix Ticar!  They’ve been here in the United States for two years and are proud parents of a beautiful baby girl, Abagaelle. Calix and Enide have been learning English since Enide was expecting last year, studying with long-time LVA volunteer tutor David (“Professor”) Zamlich.  “I have to work to keep up with them,” says Zamlich. “They are sucking up knowledge like sponges.”  He asserts that the best motivation for both students is “better English, a better job.” David teaches his students English outside under the palm trees in a relaxed, informal setting. They are working together on basic conversation and GED preparation with Calix’s long term goal to enter the community college for advanced English lessons, and his short term goal– getting a promotion in Housekeeping. David Zamlich and his trusty service dog, Bear, have volunteered for LVA for the past four years, since first being recruited by fellow LVA volunteer Stephanie Howe at the dog park.  Not only is David an ace LVA tutor he is also a master carpenter who helped move LVA to its present home at the Key West Lions Club, and did all the woodworking to bring it to its present, beauteous state. David works every LVA fundraiser from Psychic Night to the Hemingway Days Caribbean Street Fair (which will take place this July 22nd coming up.) Thank you David and Bear, for all that you do! Congratulations Enide and Calix! For information on Literacy Volunteer  programs, call or text 305–304-0578, visit their website: lva-Monroe.org or email [email protected]
