FUEL TRUCK ROLLED OVER AT GENERAL AVIATION SECTION OF KEY WEST INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

KEY WEST, FL – At 6:58 p.m. Tuesday, Monroe County’s Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting unit got a call of jet fuel leaking from an overturned fuel truck at the general aviation section at Key West International Airport.

The Signature Flight Support truck, with a capacity of 7,000 gallons, was believed to have about 4,000 gallons onboard. An unknown amount of fuel leaked. The ARFF crew, which is stationed at the airport, covered the fuel spill with foam and surrounded it with booms for containment.

The driver of the truck appears to have made a tight left turn in front of the hangar, causing the truck to roll on its side. The drive of the truck was transported to Lower Keys Medical Center with minor injuries.

The incident closed part of the general aviation ramp, but general aviation flights can still land. The incident did not impact commercial flights at the airport. Cleanup crews are working to reopen the ramp.

Florida Highway Patrol is investigating.
