MONROE COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD MEETING HIGHLIGHTS FOR JUNE 13

The Monroe County School District met June 13th, 2017 at the Marathon High School Media Center for a scheduled School Board workshop and meeting. The meeting convened with three board members, with Vice Chairman Bobby Highsmith and Board Member Ron Martin absent due to scheduled travel.

Here are highlights from the workshop and meeting:

  • Executive Director of Assessment and Accountability, David Murphy discussed the preliminary assessment results for the Florida Standards Assessment (FSA), end-of-course (EOC), and Statewide Science Assessment (SSA) for students taking exams throughout the district. He pointed out programming implemented via the Teaching and Learning team, which contributed greatly to the strong performance. Mr. Murphy let the Board know that school grades would be available in August.
  • The Board heard from the Executive Director of Finance and Performance, Jim Drake and the Executive Director of Operations and Planning, Patrick Lefere presented a capital project timeline and budget for the next five years. Construction projects like the reconstruction and renovation of Gerald Adams Elementary, Stanley Switlik Elementary, and Plantation Key School are well underway, and Mr. Lefere mentioned that the fabricated walls for PKS are scheduled to arrive within the week.
  • CEO of Keys AHEC, Michael Cunningham presented a budget proposal for services provided in schools throughout the district. The services included more staff, and additional sites, at eight schools, and an expansion in service at Gerald Adams Elementary.

The Marathon High School Athletics Department received GEMS awards for receiving the Fred Rozelle Sportsmanship Award for a second year in a row.

  • District officials awarded the Florida Writes team, consisting of Dr. Kathy Lancaster and Dr. Lois Wolfe Markham GEMS, for their work on coordinating the district-wide literacy effort. There were 91 entries for the contest.
  • Superintendent Mark T. Porter presented a report for non-bargaining unit hourly employee compensation for the 2017-2018 school year.
  • Mr. Lefere also presented a report during regular meeting on the district’s plan to purchase interactive panels from ClearTouch for technologically enhancing the student learning environment.
  • The School Board Members also approved the following items:

 

  • Approval of Job Description, 77330 Human Resources Specialist
  • Approval of the Interactive Panels purchase
  • Approval of the Instructional Materials purchase
  • Approval of student discipline case 16170012
  • Approval of the addendum of the purchase agreement contract between the Cotton of Key west Limited Partnership and the School Board of Monroe County providing for an extension of the due diligence period
