Castaways Against Cancer – Kayaking for the Cure

The Castaways Against Cancer team describes themselves as a rag-tag group of kayaking enthusiasts who paddle from Miami to Key West to raise money for the American Cancer Society during their annual Relay For Life event. They are very proud of their accomplishments over the years, but it has only been made possible through the support of their sponsors, friends, and families.

Since their inaugural voyage, 18 years ago, generous people have helped raise more than $700,000 for the ACS Relay For Life of the Lower Keys team. Many have donated in the name of a loved one – and those names are on their website, www.castawaysagainstcancer.com and are read aloud at a ceremony in Key West at the end of our trip.

This year the team of paddlers will land on Smathers Beach, across from the Sheraton, on Friday, June 16th, at 2:00 PM, and the community is encouraged to cheer them in.

Cancer affects all of us in one way or another. Cancer can not only do physical damage to the body, but can leave permanent scars on its victims and their loved ones. These are the people for whom the team paddle.

The mission of the Castaways Against Cancer is two-fold. The goal is to not only find a cure for cancer by raising thousands of dollars each year for the American Cancer Society, but to honor those who have fought the good fight.

In their words, “It’s that simple. We kayak, you donate and we all pray for a cure.”
