FKCC Students Named to State and National Academic Teams

FKCC students Mariah Medina and Greigh Olson, were bestowed medallions for their selection to the All-Florida Academic Team.  Florida College System Chancellor Dr. Madeline Pumariega. FKCC President Dr. Jonathan Gueverra, and FKCC Phi Theta Kappa club sponsor Professor Michelle Walsh were on hand to congratulate the students.

KEY WEST, FL, April 25, 2017— Two Florida Keys Community College students, Mariah Medina and Greigh OIson, were named to the 2017 All-Florida Academic Team, which is comprised of the highest performing students in the Florida College System’s 28 institutions.  The 127 team members were nominated by their local colleges’ chapters of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), an international honor society among two-year colleges, for their academic achievement, leadership, and service to the community.  Medina and Olson were formally recognized at an awards banquet in Tallahassee on April 7.  Additionally, Olson earned a national level accolade as a 2017 Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team Silver Scholar.  She was among only 50 students in the U.S. to receive the distinction as well as a $1,250 scholarship.

Medina, who is dually enrolled at Key West Collegiate Academy, is set to graduate from FKCC on May 5 with an Associate in Arts degree, prior to receiving her high school diploma.  While at FKCC, she served as the secretary of PTK and was a member of Psi Beta Psychology Club and the Environmental Club.  Medina will attend Stetson University in the fall where she plans to pursue a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in Environmental Studies with the ultimate career goal of helping to preserve the planet.

Olson is also slated to graduate from FKCC on May 5 with several credentials: an Associate in Arts, an Associate in Science in Marine Environmental Technology, a Professional Research Diving Certificate, and an American Academy of Underwater Sciences Scientific Diver Certificate.  She will attend Florida Institute of Technology in the fall, where she plans to ultimately earn a doctorate degree in Biology and pursue a career in aquaculture.  At FKCC, Olson was the president of PTK and a member of the Aquaculture Club, Environmental Club, and Scuba Club.
