Fringe Theater Re-Visits Conch Republic, The Musical

Ever wonder how the Conch Republic was born? Fringe Theater revises its smash hit musical with its historical (and hysterical) retelling of the Conch Republic tale, on April 20-23. Already seen the show? You haven’t seen it like this. It’s new. It’s fresh. It’s re-visited!

“When we re-visited the idea to produce the play again, we decided to try something new,” explains Fringe board president Janet Bengel. Something new? Almost everything is new in this production.

Not only does the show have a new name (Conch Republic … Re-Visited!), it also has a new director (JB McLendon), a new venue (The Studios of Key West), and completely new staging (in the round).  It also has a new script and score (written for four actors instead of eight).

“We’ve still got the songs that our audiences love,” says the show’s composer Gayla Morgan, who opened an original show off-Broadway last fall.  “And the script is funnier than ever,” says playwright and Fringe co-founder Monnie King. “Prepare to wave flags!”

Conch Republic … Re-Visited! Tells the true story of those historic moments in 1982 that pushed Key West to declare its independence from the United States. It’s a rollicking tale of how Key West took on the Feds in one of the greatest PR stunts … ever!

The musical weaves (wacky) fictionalized characters with the (wonderful) real people who made it all happen! Four amazing actors take-on the challenge of collectively performing the 21 roles required to tell the tale of the Conch Republic: Bernadette Restivo, Arthur Crocker, Mathias Maloff, and Rhett Kalman. The show is directed and choreographed by JB McLendon with musical direction by William Weinstein.
