FKCC English Professor Earns Exemplary Leadership Award
KEY WEST, FL, April 5, 2017— Florida Keys Community College English Professor Hilary Parmentier received an “Idahlynn Karre Exemplary Leadership Award” from the Chair Academy, a worldwide academic leadership organization. Parmentier, who leads the College’s English, Social Sciences, Humanities, and Arts departments, accepted the award at the Chair Academy’s annual International Leadership Conference in Orlando last Thursday.
According to the academy, recipients of the award are nominated by their colleagues in recognition of “their exemplary leadership, their demonstrated best leadership practices, and their commitment to their institutions, departments, and teams, and the students they serve.”
“Hilary is a dynamic department chair and leader,” said Michael McPherson, FKCC’s Dean of Arts and Hospitality. “She works in close collaboration with the other faculty members to improve the teaching and learning in a variety of ways at the College.”
Parmentier holds a bachelor’s degree in English, as well as master’s degrees in English and Education from the University of Michigan (UM)-Flint. She has worked with her alma mater while at FKCC to establish a Writing Center on the Key West Campus that follows a similar model in place at UM. She also organized efforts to bring UM’s Innovation in Education Conference to FKCC last year, which provided professional development opportunities for educators in Monroe County as well as others from around the world.
Parmentier has earned recognitions such as Faculty Member of the Year, Outstanding Achievements and Accomplishments at FKCC, and a National Society of Leadership and Success Excellence in Teaching Award. She also organizes the annual Poetry Reading at FKCC and was recently appointed to the board of the Key West Literary Seminar.
