Florida Keys Healthy Start Coalition Offers Free Classes to Become Certified Car Seat Technician

FLORIDA KEYS – Did you know that 4 out of 5 car seats are used incorrectly? Or that motor vehicle injuries are the leading cause of death for children in the United States?

The Florida Keys Healthy Start Coalition is offering free classes to community members to become certified car seat technicians, to help make sure our children travel safely on Monroe County’s dangerous roads.

The all day, 3 day certification class will be held in Key West April 24-26, followed by a mandatory community car seat safety event April 29 in Key West, where participants can practice what they have learned under the supervision of a CPT Instructor. This course is free and open to the public, but prior registration is required by April 10. Space is limited, so register early.

Through the classroom and hands on training, participants will have a unique opportunity to make a difference in the lives of our youngest citizens by gaining knowledge and skills to ensure all children are safe travelling in any vehicle. The potentially life-saving skills are especially beneficial for teachers, social workers, child care providers or emergency services employees. Many local businesses also see this as an opportunity to give back to the community by encouraging their employees to enroll in this course without loss of wages.

After successful completion of the training, participants’ Child Passenger Safety Technician certification is valid for two years to install and inspect children’s car seats and provide community education on the importance of proper car seat use.

The Coalition holds car seat installation and inspections events rotating between the Lower, Middle and Upper Keys. Technicians will be asked but are not obligated to volunteer during these events in their area or help with individual appointments. Without the volunteer technicians, the Coalition would not be able to offer this free car seat program which ensures that as many children as possible travel safely in our community.
