TERRY’S PICKY PALATE / Whadda Reuben – and Cold Brew Coffee at Goldman’s Bagel Deli
BY TERRY SCHMIDA
Ah, Goldman’s . . .
For Key Westers in the know, it’s the home of great deli comfort food, and one of the few restaurants with a lunch counter left in the city.
The eatery is famed for its piled-high sandwiches, delicious homemade, “boiled and baked” bagels, and hearty, all-day “Beatle Brunch” Sunday breakfasts.
One of its most popular offerings, however, is the Reuben, a classic American deli treat with its origins among Jewish immigrants to the U.S. From Eastern Europe a century ago.
On a recent visit to Goldman’s, it is this sandwich, made from hot corned beef, sauerkraut, Swiss cheese, and Russian dressing on grilled rye, that manager and heir to the family business Gavin Dietrich decides to lay on me.
“We make our Reuben the proper way,” Dietrich said. “It’s our top-selling item, aside from our Early Bird Special.”
Dietrich speaks the truth.
The corned beef is juicy and flavorful, the Russian dressing tangy and slightly spicy, and the Swiss cheese melted just enough that it oozes slightly over the meat. The side of slaw is also delicious and slightly crunchy
The delightful Cold Brew Coffee I’m served is made from a locally-roasted espresso blend.
“It’s a bold flavor that’s brewed overnight,” Dietrich said. “The process gives it a higher caffeine ration, with less acidity and that bold flavor you want in an iced coffee.”
As for their early bird breakfast special, this great deal is a complete breakfast with eggs any style, home fries or grits, a fresh-baked bagel and bottomless coffee or a fountain drink for an embarrassingly low price.
It’s been another tasty excursion to Key West’s only real deli. For those who haven’t visited the place in a while, Dietrich said, a “Late Bird Special,” including a half-sandwich, soup, and fountain drink, has been added to the Goldman’s offerings.
I, for one, can’t wait!
