The Studios of Key West will exhibit the work of four of the island’s leading female artists
Throughout the month of March, The Studios of Key West will exhibit the work of four of the island’s leading female artists. On Thursday, Mar. 3, from 6-8pm, The Studios opens its doors to celebrate the shows for its lively First Thursdays evening.
“Together Again,” in the Sanger Gallery, is a dual exhibition featuring the work of painter Susan Sugar and sculptor Cindy Wynn, longtime friends who’ve spent decades drawing inspiration from the island. Wynn’s angular steel creations and Sugar’s open horizons complement each other in surprising ways. Wynn utilizes welding, torch-cutting and grinding to create her signature works. Sugar captures Key West’s tumultuous summer skies, painting on site in watercolor at dawn and dusk.
On view in XOJ Gallery, “Conchtown” features the colorful work of quintessential Key West artists Pam Hobbs and Maggie Ruley. Hobbs uses bold colors, black outlines, and a woozy perspective to portray the fun and whimsical character of the island, and Ruley uses vibrant hues and soft brushstrokes to create dreamy tropical scenes. Seen together, the good friends capture just about everything visitors and locals love about Key West.
A special addition to The Studios’ exhibition schedule is John Martini’s “Blues in Black and White”. The just-added show in the Zabar Gallery is a selection of ink-on-paper monoprints created in the last three weeks of November in France. Martini lives and works in Key West and Veuxhaulles-Sur-Aube, France. His sculptures are shown internationally in galleries and museums.
All three exhibitions remain on view through March 30. The Studios of Key West is located at 533 Eaton Street.
