FKCC Launches First Bachelor’s Degree

More Classes Begin in March

FKCC President Dr. Jonathan Gueverra welcomes the College’s first class of students enrolled in its first bachelor’s degree program.

KEY WEST, FL, January 11, 2017—Florida Keys Community College started 2017 with an historic moment: the launch of its first bachelor’s degree program.  The much-anticipated new degree, a Bachelor of Applied Science in Supervision and Management (BAS-SM), is the first and only public, on-campus baccalaureate degree option in the Keys.

“Until now, individuals seeking advancement through a baccalaureate degree were forced to move to the mainland, go online, pay costly private institution fees, or dismiss an undergraduate degree as an option,” said FKCC President Dr. Jonathan Gueverra.  “This is a proud moment for FKCC and it will prove to be an enormous contribution to the quality of life opportunities available for the people and businesses of Monroe County.”

The BAS-SM program includes coursework in management, finance, marketing, human resources, and leadership.  It also includes field experience in supervision and management settings to enable students to integrate theory with practice.  The bachelor’s degree builds upon associate degrees already offered at FKCC; students must complete an associate degree or equivalent prior to applying to the bachelor’s degree program.

BAS-SM courses are designed and scheduled so that local working adults can progress at a full-time pace.  The courses combine a blend of traditional, in-person classroom time with the flexibility of online learning.  Students attend classes on weekday evenings on the Key West Campus, in addition to completing related coursework via an online platform.

The first set of BAS-SM classes began on January 9; however, two more classes will be offered in a condensed, eight-week term that runs March 1 through May 1.  Financial Management will be held on Mondays from 7 to 9:45 p.m. and Quantitative Methods in Business will be held on Wednesdays also from 7 to 9:45 p.m.  Both are hybrid courses which include weekly face-to-face class sessions along with online learning.

Qualified students interested in pursuing the BAS-SM should submit an application, which can be downloaded at www.fkcc.edu/apply-now/.  For more information about any of FKCC’s programs, contact FKCC’s Recruiter Christina Leahy at 305-809-3207 or [email protected].
