Second Sensational Conch Revival Picnic Set For Wednesday
Love authentic Conch cuisine in abundance, community, music and revelry along with some fun & games? The second Conch Revival Picnic is set to satisfy all these senses on Wednesday, January 11, 5:30-8:30 p.m. at Fort East Martello.
The abundance of delicious foods at the first Conch Revival Picnic was nothing short of astounding. This go-round, Chef’s Martha Hubbard, Dave Furman, Mike Mosi, Drew Wenzle and John Ingelsby are preparing a mouth-watering cornucopia of classic Conch dishes including whole pig and fish roast, conch chowder, alligator pear (avocado salad), chilao, and a bounty of other enticing traditional Conch sides and sauces. Adding a dash of competition to the festivities, local Conch mother/daughter team Analise Smith and Teresa Menendez have been busy coordinating ‘The Queen of All Conch Cook-offs’ – a cooking competition among five local Conchs – featuring the Queen of All Puddings. The contest-judging panel will be comprised of Smith and Menendez, the Conch Revival chefs and any picnic attendee amenable to padding the competition prize kitty with a token ‘pay-off’.
Some of the recipes to be served are inspired by the postwar Key West Woman’s Club Cookbook edited by Wilhelmina Harvey, as well as recipes from other books located in the Key West Public Library collection. Sponsored in part by Pali Wine Co., event offerings are also to include music performed by renowned singer/songwriter Ben Harrison and classic conch games including bocce and dominoes.
In order to help make the picnic affordable to as many families wishing to attend as possible, ticket prices have been reduced to $30 for KWAHS members, $40 for non-members, and kids under the age of 12 are free. Anyone who purchased advance tickets at a higher price will receive an adjusted refund. Tickets available at kwahs.org/event/conch-revival-picnic. Any (limited number) tickets not sold in advance will be available at the door. The last picnic sold out, so advance ticketing is recommended.
