Impromptu Opens 42nd Season with Unusual Prima Trio

Impromptu Classical Concerts begins its 42nd season with the exciting ensemble Prima Trio, all of whom hail from Eastern Europe: Russian pianist Anastasia Dedik, who was born in the fabled city of St. Petersburg; string instrumentalist (violin and viola) Gulia Gurevich, who is a native of Uzbekistan; and clarinetist Boris Allakhverdyan, who is from Baku, Azerbaijan.

The season opener is set for Sunday, Jan. 5. at 4 p.m. at San Carlos Institute, 516 Duval St. (please note the new location).

This will be Prima Trio’s Key West debut, and the musicians, in their own words, “are looking forward to our trip, to meeting new friends. We also hope to take advantage of what the beautiful Florida Keys have to offer.”

In the recent past, Impromptu Classical Concerts were held exclusively at St. Paul’s Church but there will be some venue additions during the 2014 Season. Impromptu is spreading its wings, concertizing in three of the island city’s finest music venues — St. Paul’s Church, San Carlos Institute and Tennessee Williams Theatre located at Florida Keys Community College on Stock Island.

This Sunday’s program includes works by Max Bruch (three selections from “Eight Pieces for Clarinet, Viola and Piano, Op. 83”); Darius Milhaud (“Suite for Clarinet Violin and Piano, Opus 157b”); Srul Irving Glick (“The Klezmer’s Wedding’); Aram Katchaturian (“Trio for Clarinet, Violin and Piano”); Astor Piazzolla (“Otono Proteno” from Cuatro Estaciones Portenas, The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires ); and Peter Schickele (“Serenade for Three”).

The Prima Trio is enthusiastic about their selections. “Our program is very fun, diverse and includes works from various eras in classical music and beyond. During our performances, Prima Trio strives to reach people who love classical music as well as create a new audience through our love for what we do and a very relatable repertoire.”

Now based in New York City, the trio was founded in 2004 while its members were studying at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in Ohio. The Impromptu 2014 opening concert promises to fulfill the series’ usual high standard for musical excellence. Be sure to note the new location, the San Carlos Institute.

The next concert on January 19 will feature the Shen/Berkovsky Piano Duo and will be held at St. Paul’s Church.
