“Women’s March on Duval for Human Rights Planned for January 21, 2017”
Key West, FL. Residents of the Florida Keys met Dec. 5th at The Blue Room on Simonton Street in Key West to plan a Women’s March in connection with the Women’s March in Washington on Jan. 21, 2017.
The Women’s March on Duval, which will begin at 2 p.m. on Jan. 21st with a route that extends from the Southernmost Beach to Mallory Square, dovetails with the Washington, D.C. march and with others scheduled around the country on the day after the presidential inauguration. The Keys-centered march reflects the unique character of the Florida Keys with an emphasis on Key West’s One Human Family commitment.
“We, the One Human Family of the Florida Keys,” said Jamie Mattingly during organizational meeting, “will stand together in solidarity with our partners and children for the protection of our rights, our safety, our health, and our families.” More than a dozen women and men from the Florida Keys responded to Mattingly’s Facebook Page call to action to coordinate a local march for those who couldn’t make it to the national march. Over the next six weeks, the grassroots group will raise money to offset costs related to the march and reach out to Keys residents to encourage participation.
The Women’s March in Key West intends to send a message to our new administration and to the world that all humans deserve equal rights. “We stand together, recognizing that defending the most marginalized among us is defending all of us.” The march supports advocacy for social injustice and calls on all defenders of human rights to join the march along Duval. This march is the first step towards unifying communities nationwide to create change from the grassroots level up.
Those supporting the march nationwide and locally say they will not rest until women have parity and equity at all levels of leadership in society and that they work peacefully while recognizing there is no true peace without justice and equity for all. The march is free and inclusive to all and whomever support human rights. You could body paint “one human family” on all of the marchers, but of course all of the woman would be arrested because the City of Key West does not afford women that right. Only the men are allowed.
