Peace, Love and Conversations presents Crucial Conversations: First in a Series of Community Discussions
Join the gathering at Unity of the Keys this Monday evening, 11/14 at 6:30pm in the Sanctuary, for the first in a series of discussions and the launch of the new movement “Peace, Love, and Conversations: Understanding Our Political and Cultural Differences.” We will be exploring how to have “crucial conversations” to gain a deeper understanding of each other across what can feel like insurmountable divides. Crucial conversations are those potentially emotionally charged interactions; those discussions where our defenses prevent us from being both authentic and nonthreatening to others. It’s about how to help yourself and others stay in dialogue so you — and they — can get the results you both want: to hear and to be heard, to understand and to be understood. Its about learning, finding the truth(s), and strengthening — or mending — relationships.
About Us
“Peace, Love, and Conversations: Understanding Our Political and Cultural Differences” started as a spontaneous get-together following the 2016 election. Around 20 people (plus a dog in a Wonder Woman costume) met for sunset at the White Street Pier here in Key West, Florida, to share with others face-to-face (versus on social media) our postelection thoughts, reactions, and questions.
Many members of our community were elated with the election’s outcome (the Florida Keys vote tally was resoundingly red); others expressed feeling less secure in their futures, even less safe in their city and country, due to the results.
Yet, we all share a love of revelry and of island life, and choose to live someplace where the official adopted philosophy is One Human Family. The election brought home that while we cherish living in a truly diverse place, there is much we don’t understand about how our fellow Keys residents see the world, or about what matters to them.
We want to find out. We hope you do, too.
Mission Statement
Our mission is not to change anyone’s opinions or beliefs, but to better understand them, through a conversation series about difficult topics where unlike-minded Florida Keys residents can respectfully talk with — and listen to — one another. These forums will be facilitated by communication experts, mediation professionals, faith leaders and political party representatives. We hope they will foster curiosity and grow insights across differences.
