South Florida Symphony Orchestra Announces $75,000 Gift From Patron

Gift helps open 2016 season

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL (Nov. 7, 2016) – The South Florida Symphony Orchestra is proud to announce a $75,000 gift from the estate of Rosemary Duffy Larson. Among Mrs. Larson’s interests was her love of the arts, and providing culturally underserved children with access to music. She was also passionate about orchestral music and the tunes that defined the early 20th Century America from composers such as George and Ira Gershwin and Irving Berlin. The Symphony will recognize Mrs. Larson’s philanthropy this week at the season kickoff concert A Celebration of the Great American Songbook. Thanks to Larson’s underwriting, audiences across South Florida will benefit from her generous spirit and passion for music.

“Rosemary was the quintessential impresario of the arts,” Symphony President and CEO Jacqueline Lorber said. “Her commitment to charitable pursuits reflected her desire to spread joy through the arts in general and orchestral music in particular.” Bringing last century’s music to contemporary audiences will bring to life hits from Jerome Kern, Rodgers and Hammerstein, and Johnny Mercer, thus ensuring a new generation has the opportunity to advance appreciation for this great artform. Joining a cast of renowned guest soloists is the incomparable singer-pianist Bobby Nesbitt who has traveled the world as a passionate supporter, championing this beloved nostalgic era.

About The South Florida Symphony Orchesta

The South Florida Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1997 in Key West by Cuban American music director and conductor Sebrina María Alfonso, who received enthusiastic support from her beloved hometown. In 2009, under the leadership of CEO Jacqueline Lorber, the Symphony expanded to Broward County, and was renamed the South Florida Symphony Orchestra to reflect the expansion. Since then, the Symphony has grown from three concerts and $150,000 in revenue to over 50 concerts and events with more than $1.5 million in revenue. Now celebrating its 19th season, the Symphony performs nearly 50 Masterworks, Pops, Tropical Beats and summer Chamber concerts each year in Broward, Miami-Dade, Monroe, and Palm Beach counties. The Symphony in the Schools Program serves as many as 3,500 children annually. Comprised of some of the nation’s most sought-after professional musicians and world-renowned soloists, the Symphony consistently receives high acclaim from residents and visitors to Florida seeking cultural respite through orchestral music, the most revered form of music.
