November is Adoption Awareness Month
Mayor Craig Cates has proclaimed November as Adoption Awareness Month. The designation salutes adoptive parents who step up to provide love, protection and support for abused and neglected children.
“The youth of Key West are our most precious resource and hope for the future, and all children deserve a safe, loving and nurturing place to call home,” reads the proclamation. “The child welfare system is only as good as those who chose to be a part of it.
“Adoption has increase in Monroe County by 125 percent over the past year,” said Wesley House Family Services Director of Community Development Jeremy Wilkerson. “Nearly 30 percent of the children that have to be removed from a home deemed to be unfit or unsafe end up being adopted. Thank you to this entire community for what you do.”
