The Konk Life Candidate Questionnaire: Conducted by Mark Howell
Kathryn Watkins
Q. In 20 words or less, let our readers know the reasons in general that you believe you would make the very best person to fulfill the position for which you are running.
A. I have a Masters of Business Administration, founded my small business in the keys and feel I can bring responsibility back to the District 1 seat.
Q. What specifically are the top four factors you believe qualify you over the assets of any other potential candidate?
A.
1. Focus on safety – I would not ignore nearly 3 dozen local doctors asking safety questions on a program, I would push for the answer not another sales pitch
2. Principle of cost effectiveness – I would not propose to waste $1,000,000 tax payor dollars as my opponent has done
3. Planning for future – not claim financial competence then deplete a necessary building fund and act surprised at massive taxes as my opponent has done
4. Most of all responsibility – I own my positions, will attend training sessions, will listen and focus on PREVENTION, not leave people with SWATTING
Q. What is your personal view on the state of the nation in this year’s particularly interesting political season?
A. We are again at a cross roads in National politics. Two radically different futures are possible when choosing between the presidential candidates.
Q. Given your personal awareness of governance in Southeast Florida, are you optimistic about relations between the public and the powers that be?
A. Absolutely
Q. Do you feel that the general tenor of political discourse is becoming less polite in Monroe County or staying about the same?
A. I think it is polite despite the sincere differences between the candidates.
Q. Tell us more about your personal history –- your work and family life –- and how they relate to your political ambitions.
A. Having a Masters in Business Administration, I founded and run my small business in the keys. I practice social media marketing. Met my husband here who is a local physician. We have 5 children and a grandchild between us. Also, there are two dogs, two hamsters and are remodeling our home in Key Haven. My political ambition is to help protect my family, friends and neighbors in a responsible manner.
Q. From your personal experience, would a generally peaceable outlook in the Keys depend upon a measure of control over the number of our visitors and residents?
A. I would look to keep a safe and secure environment for our locals and visitors a like by preventing actively mosquito born illnesses.
Q. What do you personally love most about Monroe County and the Florida Keys?
A. I know of no place like the Florida Keys. Sun, small town atmosphere and ties to the sea. I can think of no better place to raise my children.
Q. What troubles you the most about today’s Monroe County and the Florida Keys?
A. I am most concerned about public health. Married to a doctor, working in social media seeing what people post as concerns, and the fiscal negligence that is putting our community at risk in certain board members at mosquito control has me very troubled and wanting to help.
Q. What planning or political mistakes do you personally believe were the worst to be inflicted on the Keys over the past decade?
A. The greatest mistake going on right now is the cut, spend and crash policy that has infected the mosquito board. It must stop. Mosquito control is as important as the health department. We need leadership and corrective action to overcome the short sighted mismanagement that my opponent has burdened our now faltering mosquito control.
Q. Who is your favorite character in the history of the keys?
A. Edith Amsterdam was a great lady who it was my pleasure to meet.
Q. Who is your least favorite character?
A. I can’t think of any
Q. What is your favorite book?
A. Gone With The Wind
Q. What is your favorite movie?
A. Gone With The Wind
Q. What is your favorite quote?
A.
May the road rise to meet you.
May the wind
be always at your back.
May the sun shine
warm upon your face.
And rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.
