Congressman Joaquin Castro Campaigns for Joe Garcia
Miami, FL- Texas Congressman Joaquin Castro joined former Democratic Congressman Joe Garcia for an event in Homestead. Garcia and Castro were joined by members of the Mexican American Council, one of South Dade’s leading community and educational organizations. Rep. Castro spoke about the good work of Hillary Clinton and Joe Garcia, and rejected the rhetoric of Donald Trump and the anti-immigrant and anti-woman policies of Republicans like Rep. Curbelo.
“Joe was a tireless advocate for South Dade in Congress and I’m happy to join him and so many other community leaders in South Florida,” said Congressman Joaquin Castro. “We need to tackle some major issues in the next administration and electing Democratic leaders like Hillary Clinton and Joe Garcia is the best way to get it done.”
“I’m honored to bring Congressman Castro to South Dade and appreciate his support for our work,” said Joe Garcia, candidate for Florida’s 26th Congressional District. “Whether in San Antonio or in Homestead, we reject the offensive rhetoric of Donald Trump and Republicans like Carlos Curbelo who support his platform with their votes.”
Maria and Cip Garza of the Mexican American Council, Congressman Castro and Joe Garcia engaged in conversation about the policies and goals for the next Congress. Various elected officials and community leaders attended the event to show their support for Joe Garcia and his bid for Congress. Attendees included Florida City Mayor Otis Wallace, State Rep. Kionne McGhee, State Senate candidate Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, State House candidate Robert Asencio and Pastor Michael Stiles.
In Congress, Garcia delivered for his district. Garcia was the sponsor of the last comprehensive immigration reform bill to be filed in the House. When the Republican leadership refused to hold a vote on the bill, Garcia led a group Democratic lawmakers in asking President Obama to take action, which he did in the form of DAPA. He successfully cut student loan rates, which have since dropped to their lowest point in 10 years. Joe was also an advocate for clean water and the environment, having secured $200 million for everglades restoration and an additional $2 million in funding for water quality improvements.
