Man’s death may be suicide

Sheriff’s detectives say their investigation into the death of a 59 year old homeless man on Big Pine Key may have been the result of a suicide, but their investigations  are still active into the death.

The man was found near a homeless camp off of Quail Roost Trail just before 5 p.m. Wednesday. All indications found at the scene and upon examination of the body indicate the man appears to have used a knife to kill himself. He had a sharp force injury on his neck; a knife was found still on the scene, in his hand. The man is known to have had an episode of depression recently. An autopsy was done by the Monroe County Medical Examiner today. Results of that autopsy are pending the return of toxicology reports.

Detectives are still attempting to locate the man’s family to notify them of his death, and are still requesting the name be withheld until they can exhaust those efforts. They are still actively investigating due to the unusual nature of the death.
