OneBlood First Blood Center in the Country to Implement OrSense Revolutionary Technology Makes Blood Donation More Comfortable for Donors
(Orlando, Florida, June 8, 2016) OneBlood, Inc. the not-for-profit blood center serving Florida and parts of Georgia, Alabama and South Carolina is making the blood donation process more comfortable for donors by being the first blood center in the country to introduce OrSense, a non-invasive devise that measures the donor’s hemoglobin and eliminates the often dreaded finger prick.
The adoption of the OrSense system represents a paradigm shift in the way blood donors are measured for hemoglobin. Before a person can donate blood, their hemoglobin levels need to be checked to make sure it is safe for them to donate. The traditional way of testing hemoglobin has been to prick the person’s finger with a small needle. With the new OrSense technology, the finger prick is no longer necessary. Instead the donor simply places their finger into a ring shaped sensor that measures their hemoglobin levels and pulse rate.
“Blood donors often cite the finger prick as the most unpleasant part of the blood donation experience,” said Don Doddridge, President and Chief Executive Officer for OneBlood. “The new OrSense system makes the finger prick a thing of the past and at the same time improves the donor experience, eliminates discomfort and makes the donation process more comfortable,” said Doddridge.
“The OrSense NBM 200 System uses a proprietary occlusion spectroscopy technology platform,” said Chip Neff, President of OrSense U.S. LLC. “We believe it is a breakthrough technology that allows for painless, reliable and cost effective measuring of blood parameters including hemoglobin and pulse rate,” said Neff.

About OrSense’s Technology
OrSense’s NBM200 is based on the company’s proprietary SpectOLightTM technology, which uses an optical measurement platform combined with a ring-shaped sensor that is fitted on the subject’s finger. A gentle pressure is applied by the sensor, temporarily occluding the blood flow in the finger. New blood dynamics are created, generating a unique, strong optical transmission signal, with a high signal-to-noise ratio which is wholly blood specific. During the occlusion, optical elements in the sensor perform a sensitive measurement of the light transmitted through the finger. This method, called Occlusion Spectroscopy, provides a quick, reliable and painless measurement of the subject’s blood constituents. OrSense is a medical device company developing and commercializing non-invasive monitoring systems for measurement of blood parameters including hemoglobin and pulse rate. OrSense’s systems are available globally and been successfully installed in healthcare facilities worldwide. For additional information visit OrSense’s website at www.orsense.com.
