Monroe County Accepting Public Comment On Airports Projects FAA Application

KEY WEST – Monroe County is now accepting public comment regarding its application to the Federal Aviation Administration to use the Passenger Facility Charge collected at Key West International Airport and Florida Keys Marathon International Airport for seven projects and administrative costs.

The projects are:

  • Noise Insulation Program – $58,000 (It’s the 10%  match of FAA Airport Improvement Program  funds)
  • Baggage Handling System upgrade – $450,000
  • Security Improvements – $628,000  ($277,000 50% FDOT match / $350,000 100% EAS )
  • Runway Departure Enhancements – $750,000
  • Marathon Airport (all 10% match for Airport Improvement Program projects)

–      Obstruction removal (shade hangars) – $12,000

–      Threshold Light Relocation – $5,000

–      Miscellaneous Planning Studies – $26,000

The runway departure enhancements project would lengthen Runway 9 at Key West International Airport by 271 feet to 5,072 feet, adding a greater margin of safety for larger aircraft that make up 80 percent of the traffic. Initial review indicates no significant change in noise contours.

The Passenger Facility Charge is $4.50 per ticket and results in $1.3 million per year in revenue. The price tag is $1,957, 633 for the seven projects and associated administrative costs.
