MONROE COUNTY, FL — In a recent case, Circuit Judge James Morgan sentenced Steven Zalesky after he pleaded no contest and was adjudicated guilty to Battery on a Person 65 Years of Age or Older.
Judge Morgan sentenced Zalesky to 100 days in the Monroe County Jail, with credit for time served. The court also ordered him to pay $1,385 in attorney’s fees, court costs, prosecution costs, investigation costs, and supervision costs.
The conviction arose from an incident in Key Largo on May 6, 2026. According to the investigation, deputies responded to a reported disturbance and determined that Zalesky battered a victim who was over 65 years old during an altercation inside the residence. The investigation also determined that he took the victim’s cellular phone during the incident before deputies arrived. He was arrested at the scene and later prosecuted on a battery charge.
Chief Assistant State Attorney Joseph Mansfield stated, “Everyone deserves to feel safe in their own home, regardless of age. Cases involving violence against older adults are taken seriously, and our office will continue to work with our law enforcement partners to ensure those who commit these offenses are held accountable under Florida law.”
Assistant State Attorney Melissa Simmons prosecuted the case.
