MONROE COUNTY, FL — In a recent case, Guillermo Cornelio was sentenced to 18 months in Florida State Prison after admitting to violating the terms of his probation before Circuit Judge Mark Wilson.

Judge Wilson revoked Cornelio’s probation and imposed the state prison sentence after Cornelio admitted to failing to comply with the conditions of his court-ordered supervision. Cornelio was also ordered to satisfy all outstanding financial obligations associated with the case.

Cornelio had originally been sentenced on January 8, 2026, to three years of probation following a felony battery conviction stemming from a December 6, 2024 incident at Higgs Beach in Key West.

According to court records, Cornelio violated multiple conditions of his probation by failing to report to his probation officer as directed and by changing his residence without obtaining prior approval. Department of Corrections records further indicated that his whereabouts became unknown during the course of supervision, resulting in a violation warrant being issued.

The underlying offense involved an altercation that resulted in another individual being injured. Witness statements and physical evidence led to Cornelio’s arrest and prosecution.

Chief Assistant State Attorney Joseph Mansfield emphasized that probation is an opportunity that must be taken seriously.

“Probation is an opportunity, not an entitlement,” Mansfield said. “When someone is given the chance to remain in the community instead of going to prison, there is an expectation that they will comply with the court’s conditions. Failing to report, abandoning supervision, and disregarding those obligations demonstrates a disregard for the authority of the court and leaves little alternative but to impose a prison sentence.”

Assistant State Attorney Carter Reeves prosecuted the case.
