Scam Alert
While everyone is busy with this hectic high season, it’s a good time to remember that scammers don’t take a holiday. And they’re always coming up with new ways to try and bilk people out of their money.
There have been recent reports of a new scam being perpetrated in Monroe County. A caller has identified himself as a member of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. According to the reports, this scammer warns people that they have missed a court summons. He attempts to have them make a payment in order to avoid arrest.
This is a reminder that law enforcement officers will never call and insist on payment to avoid arrest. It’s also a reminder that, as convincing as the scammer’s story is, never give out critical personal information over the phone. And if someone insists you wire or transfer money, be very wary. Always check to find out if the caller is legitimate.
