GIFT SAFE TOYS DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON
The Florida Department of Health encourages Florida residents and visitors to choose safe toys this holiday season. To keep your holiday healthy and fun, make sure to choose toys for a child that are age-appropriate and match the interest and skill level of the child.
“Holiday gifts are exciting at any age, particularly for children,” said State Surgeon General and Secretary of Health Dr. John Armstrong. “Be sure to select gifts that are safe and age-appropriate so that the holidays remain happy and healthy.”
When buying a toy or game, take a moment to read the instructions and consider the child’s age when making a purchase. Pay careful attention to small pieces, including smaller batteries that may be included in electronic toys and TV remote controls. Even though a toy is for an older child, that doesn’t mean it can’t pose a potential danger for younger, more curious siblings. Be sure to include a helmet when purchasing a bike, skateboard or scooter for your child.
Parents should also be cautious of the placement of ornaments if they decorate a tree this holiday season. Breakable ornaments and decorations that have metal hooks should be moved toward the top of the tree to avoid the risk of injury.
