FRINGE Announces Writing Program

This year the Fringe is offering a very special program – an opportunity for aspiring playwrights to work with renowned playwright and teacher Toby Armour to write their own short play. The class will begin Monday, January 25 and run for 14 weeks concluding with a public reading of the new plays on May 12. Enroll online at www.fringetheater.org. Cost is $65.

Toby Armour, the Fringe’s Resident Playwright, is a national award-winning playwright and Jerome Fellow, many of whose plays are based on oral history and stories of community. She has led writing workshops in Arizona, New York, and New England. Her plays have been done in traditional, as well as such non-traditional venues, as a saloon (Flagstaff, AZ) a hole in the ground (Boston’s Jamaica Plain) and a whorehouse-turned public library (Patagonia, AZ).

The program, titled Our Houses Speak will focus on the development of 10-minute play inspired by a Key West house, its’ people, history, pets, furniture, joys, sorrows – the possibilities are endless. The class will culminate in a public reading by Fringe actors. There is no requirement for a playwriting background but rather an interest in writing and a sincere desire to try the short play form.  Writers will select an anecdote or story to write about and work with Toby in weekly sessions to develop their play.  Space is limited. Workshop location will be determined and announced to participants.

“Our mission is to bring theater arts into the community and we are very fortunate to have Toby on board to share her expertise with locals interested in writing.” says Fringe’s Producing Artistic Director, Monnie King.

The Fringe offers other community programs including

Shakespeare in School which brings live Shakespeare performances to schools in Monroe county, the wildly successful Alice’s Parlor II which offers acting opportunities to new actors; and Key West Characters which commissions and produces plays about Key West’s past – like Conch Republic (The Musical!) which will run for the fourth straight year, opening April 21, 2016.
