KEY WEST, Fla. (AP) — Bob Bull and Randy Scism piloted CMS 3 to the Superboat Unlimited-class title Sunday, the final day of the Key West World Championship offshore powerboat races.
Bull, from Melbourne, Florida, and Scism, from Wentzville, Missouri, finished second Sunday to earn the title.
“We had enough points that we knew if we got second place, it would clinch the world championship for us,” Scism said.
Scism said part of the 9.75-lap course was quite bumpy, but the CMS team anticipated the weather conditions and changed the boat’s setup.
“We changed our propeller combination, changed our center of gravity,” he said. “We gave up some top speed for some mid-range and punch, and it just worked out great for us.”
WHM Motorsports, driven by William Mauff of East Setauket, New York, and throttled by Jay Muller of Sallie River, New Jersey, ended the three-race series with the Superboat class title.
Hooters-Instigator, owned and throttled by Peter Meyer of Port Washington, New York, and driven by John Stanch of Westmont, New Jersey, successfully defended its Superboat Extreme world title.
