30-Minute Free Performance Marks 20 Years of Innovative Dance Programming
KEY WEST, June 23, 2017 – The Studios of Key West and Daniel Gwirtzman Dance Company, sought after for their impactful and virtuosic works, present an evening of dance Wednesday, July 12, 6:30-7:00pm, followed by a talkback. With an acclaimed cast of dancers, featuring Daniel Gwirtzman and guest dancers from the island, the Company brings its accessible programming to Key West for the first time.
The one-night only showing will involve live performance, video dance, improvisation, and audience participation. Known for their dynamic, innovative and charismatic performances, the New York City-based Company enjoys its sweet nineteenth with a string of celebratory, site-specific film premieres, commissions, residencies and performances. Currently in residence through TSKW this is Daniel’s only performance in the area this summer.
The program consists of:
Doodling (2016)–The solo choreographed and performed by Daniel allows the movement and score to scroll calligraphically in a playful, stream-of-conscious manner like a meandering doodle on the page. This elasticity allows the dancer to explore a range of virtuosic qualities, and a diverse range of music, as the piece’s careful structure runs off the page, moving from the literal to a place of abstraction. Premiered last September at Manhattan’s Harkness Center for Dance at the 92nd Street Y.
Terrain (2017)–Filmed in a desert region of Spain, Terrain depicts a body in a vast mountainous landscape. At first a dot indistinguishable against this backdrop, the viewer is challenged to discern the camouflaged body. As the film progresses, the body comes into close focus, revealing detailed glimpses akin to an animal in the wild. What story can a body in this space provoke? When is movement authentic, when is it artificial? Stripped of a recognizable narrative, Terrain explores when a context is disrupted. The idiosyncratic choreography investigates gesture and form, transforming the body into a panorama of identities.
Snapshots (2017)–Through the perspective of Daniel’s exploratory lens, a new work encompassing videodance and live performance, all created in Key West, and incorporating local dancers from the island, will preview.
