30 Members Have Joined Plastic Free Key West

Reef Relief is proud to announce their newest sustainability initiative, Plastic Free Key West, has reached 30 business members. This program is a special partnership with the City of Key West as part of Resolution No. 23-15, which aims to reduce the amount of single use plastic in the community. Through this voluntary program, businesses are recognized for taking extra steps for the environment. Qualifying businesses apply, receive an audit, and qualify for one of three tiered options. They are then featured on an interactive map with the City of Key West.

Tier One is when a business removes at least one eligible single-use plastic product. Tier Two is when the business has removed two or more single-use plastic products. Tier Three is where the business is 100% single-use plastics-free. Eligible products include cups, cutlery, drinking bottles and caps, food wrappers, grocery bags, lids, personal care products, produce bags, ramekins/sauce containers, stirrers, and take-out containers. Currently, bioplastics are not considered an alternative and are considered plastic in this program.

Reef Relief is excited to announce 30 businesses have joined the voluntary program. Purple Heron Charters, St. Paul’s Espicopal Church, and Happy Landings Marina have been accepted as Tier One businesses by eliminating one single-use plastic item.
