Betty Jean Steinshouer To Present Florida History From ‘Palmetto-Leaves’ To ‘The Yearling’ To ‘The River Of Grass’ At Custom House Museum
On Thursday, March 10, from 6-7pm, Key West Art & Historical Society welcomes Betty Jean Steinshouer who will present Florida History from ‘Palmetto-Leaves’ to ‘The Yearling’ to ‘The River of Grass’ in the Helmerich Research & Learning Center at the Custom House Museum. In character and in costume, Steinshouer will bring to life Harriet Beecher Stowe, Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings and Marjory Stoneman Douglass, three women authors whose books are credited with helping to put Florida “on the map.”
Steinshouer has been doing public programs and teaching seminars for the Florida Humanities Council since 1989 and has toured 43 other states for the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Big Read Program of the National Endowment of the Arts. She is a Fellow in the Florida Studies Program at the University of South Florida.
Florida History from ‘Palmetto-Leaves’ to ‘The Yearling’ to ‘The River of Grass’ is sponsored The Florida Humanities Council, The Helmerich Trust, Key West Marriott Beachside Hotel and the Marion Stevens Fund and is part of the organization’s Distinguished Speaker Series, a twice-monthly program that highlights the abundant history and cultural assets of our islands through informal lectures.
